Friday, June 3, 2011 Interview with Yuengling Brewery

Yuengling is the oldest American brewery still in operation, and always finds a place in's beer fridge. From the classic traditional lager, to the dark as night porter, Yuengling provides high quality beer at a ridiculously low price! We recently had the please of conducting an online interview with Pete Kalinich, the brewing lead at Yuengling's Pottsville base. Pete gave us some fantastic answers and we hope you enjoy!

Manscave(MC)- What beer would you recommend for someone who is just entering the world of craft beer?

Pete Kalinich (PK)- I would recommend for a new beer drinker our Light Lager or our Premium Light.  But for an experienced beer drinker who is looking for the next step in beer drinking and something to put up against a craft beer I would recommend our Chesterfield Ale or our Porter.  Then to really spin there heads I would fill a 24 oz. glass with half of the Ale and the other half of Porter and introduce then to an original Yuengling Half and Half!

MC- Do you feel that home brewers generally provide you with more or less support than other beer drinkers?

PK- I feel the home brewer supports us because they understand the trade and they know the difficulties in brewing a consistent product.  A home brewer recognizes  quality ingredients and the hard work and commitment it takes to make a quality beer.

MC- What inspires you to think of new types of beer to brew? How often does Yuengling introduce new styles?

PK- The inspiration for new beers comes from the different seasons or holidays of the year.  For example we have a Bock beer that is only on the market for the lent season. Some breweries will offer a lighter beer for the summer season and then they will offer a darker beer for the winter holidays.  In the past a seasonal brew was sometimes only made when certain ingredient where in season.  At the Yuengling brewery we reintroduced the Bock beer in 2007 and it was a big hit.  The last time we made a bock beer was in the 1950’s.  In my 16 years at the Yuengling we have introduced Light Lager and Bock, our only seasonal beer.  But stay tuned there just maybe something special coming soon!

MC- Yuengling's great tasting beer is always surprisingly affordable. How do you manage to keep costs so low and provide so much flavor?   

PK- I’m not really sure how we come up with the price of our beers, it’s not my department.  We do use some of the same quality ingredients as the big guys and our workers are compensated well for there hard work and commitment to the product.  It really makes you wonder how much the beer you are drinking is really worth.  The old saying “you get what you pay for” doesn’t always apply. With Yuengling I believe you get more than what you pay for.

MC- Yuengling has been around for longer than any brewery in the US. How important is tradition within the company?

PK- Tradition is everything!  Tradition is the back bone of our company!  Tradition is something you have to earn and once you have it you take special care of it and protect it!  There is not a person here at the Yuengling brewery that doesn’t feel privileged to be a part of the even day operation of America’s Oldest Brewery!

MC- We all know that the world of craft beer is expanding at a rapid pace, but for those interested in possibly getting into the craft, what recommendations do you have?

PK- I would recommend they learn as much as possible about beer, ask as many questions as possible and be prepared to fail several times before you make a good quality beer.  The process of making beer is a lot of hard work and a 7 day a week-365 day a year commitment.  The fermenting process doesn’t take days off.  Attention to a quality product is a top priority.  For someone looking for a job in the brewery business they should be prepared to work all hours of the day/night and to learn the process completely they will need to start at the bottom by cleaning tanks, scrubbing floors and just doing the grunt work of a brewery.  Cleanliness is a also a top priority!

MC- Which of your beers would you most like to have on tap in your man cave?  

PK- In my man cave at the Kalinich house I have most of the Yuengling products to offer my family and friends.  My personal favorite is our Premium Light.  It is the most under rated and under priced light beer in the industry.  It is full of flavor, great color, priced right and only has 99 calories!  This is a beer you can enjoy for hours, the last one taste just as good as the first one.

MC- As a brewer, what is the single most important aspect of brewing that a homebrewer should take to heart?

PK- The single most important aspect of brewing is hygiene of the brewery and its workers.  From the brew kettle to the beer bottle, it is so important that everything is cleaned and sanitized to the best of your ability.  This is where the pride of the workers come into play.

MC- In your words, describe someone or something that exemplifies the Yuengling way of life.

PK- I believe Dick Yuengling and all of the workers at all the breweries  exemplifies the Yuengling way of life.  Dick and his workers have a pride in there work that is hard to find anywhere else.  I believe it is the fact that he is working (still at the age of 70) for his family of the past, present and future and he is determined to keep the Yuengling brewery family owned and operated as long as possible.  In fact I once herd him say “I’m not going to drop the ball and let this brewery go under on his watch.”  As for the workers I just believe when you work for a good family that treats you good you just want to go the extra mile and do your job to the best of your ability.  

MC- If Yuengling had its very own "Ultimate Man Cave" what would be center stage in it?

PK- At the Yuengling brewery in Pottsville we have a bar and in this bar of course is a 8 handle tap system that at all times has all of our beers on for free samples after the free tour of our brewery.  Also on the walls in the bar and in the hall way leading to the bar are pictures of the Yuengling family, friends, workers and famous people that have come to the brewery for a visit.  I believe all of these things sum up what would be in the center stage.  Yuengling is a hard working, family owed and operated, running deep with tradition and pride!  It’s the way things where in 1829 and still holds true!  At the center stage of any room should be family, friends and good beer.  What else really is there?
